What is semaglutide?

• It is a GLP-1 agonist.  'Agonist' means it is similar to a naturally occurring hormone in our body called GLP-1.

• GLP-1 is produced in the body after eating a meal.

• GLP-1 medications are used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.

How does it work?

• It makes you feel full which ultimately decreases hunger and cravings.​

• It also helps regulate your insulin and blood sugar levels.

• These effects lead to weight loss.

• Weight loss can help improve conditions that are closely related to weight:

  • Sleep apnea, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, etc.​

How much can I expect to lose?

• Studies indicate most patients lose 10-15% of their body weight. 

​

How is it administered?

• Weekly subcutaneous injections using a very small needle (similar to the needle diabetics use to inject their insulin).

​

Do I have to come into the office every week?​​​

• You will need to come into the office every week for the first 4-6 weeks. 

• After the first 4-6 weeks, if you are comfortable injecting yourself, you will not need to come in every week.

Who is NOT a candidate for this program at Emerald Aesthetics?

• < 18 years old

• Women who are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding

• Kidney disease

• Personal history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome or pancreatitis

• Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma

• Diabetics

  • While this medication is used to treat diabetes, we do not treat diabetics at Emerald Aesthetics.  We prefer you to be managed on this medication by your primary care practitioner or an endocrinologist. ​

• BMI < 25​

Are there side effects?

• Common side effects include nausea, heartburn, and constipation.  

• We will thoroughly go over these side effects with you during the consultation.

• We will also help you throughout your time in the program with strategies to minimize any side effects that you are experiencing.

How much will it cost?

• The Weight Loss Consultation Appointment costs $99.

• You then pay based on your specific dosing regimen.

• Women can expect to pay ~ $230-$380/month.

• Men can expect to pay ~ $265-$420/month.

Do you accept HSA cards?

• Yes, we accept HSA cards.

Do you offer virtual/telehealth appointments?

• We offer virtual, online appointments for Initial Weight Loss Consultation appointments.

  • ​These are offered on weekends and weekdays.

• YOU STILL HAVE TO COME TO THE OFFICE TO GET YOUR INJECTIONS.

  • ​Weight loss/injection appointments are offered at our office Monday-Friday 9am-4pm.
